The Silver American Eagle coin program is the official silver bullion program of the United States. First struck in 1986, the Silver Eagles see high demand year after year. This year, for the 35th anniversary, the US Mint has announced a redesign of the reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. This redesign puts in place brand new security features within the design, including an anti-counterfeit reeded edge that appears like a “gap” variation on the coin. The new reverse for both the Gold and Silver Eagles showcases the American Bald Eagle in two different depictions. For the Silver Eagle, you will see an American Eagle in mid-flight. Additionally, the obverse was modified to resemble the original Walking Liberty design even more.

The obverse portrays the historic design by Adolph A Weinman’s “Walking Liberty.” This illustration was on the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947 and was restored on this coin. Restored elements include Weinman’s initials, the year of mintage font, as well as minor details for Liberty’s eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm, outstretching her right arm to the horizon. She also has the American flag draped over her shoulders.

The new reverse design shows a bald eagle flying while carrying an oak branch, perhaps back to its nest or to create a new nest. The eagle is surrounded by inscriptions including the country, weight, purity, denomination, and the US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
